Habitat Happenings

It was a very meaningful experience to have Barbara Dunn, Paterson Habitat Director and a new Habitat family with us Sunday to hear more about Habitat and its impact on the city of Paterson, just fifteen miles from the church. HMPC contributed $1500 to this program this year and has supported Habitat since its inception.

To find out about upcoming Habitat events, including Hammering for Habitat on November 5, go to  www.patersonhabitat.org. To learn about the Fernie Family and Friends Build and other ways to assist, please contact Barbara Fernstrom, bfernstrom1@gmail.com, 973-271-3389. Thanks to all for your enthusiasm and support.

The people enjoyed hearing Jesus’ stories, but Jesus also wanted them to learn from the stories. The stories always made the hearers think more deeply about God. Last week we learned from Jesus the story of the woman who would not give up, the

persistent widow. In this week’s focus Bible story (Luke 18:9-14), Jesus wanted the people who thought they were important and more religious than the others to learn better. Jesus told a story about two men who went to the

temple to pray. One man was a Jewish leader. He belonged to a group called the Pharisees, all of whom knew all about the laws of God. The other man was a tax collector. He was Jewish too, but the tax collector made a living collecting taxes for the Roman government. Because he worked for

the Romans, most people didn’t like him and refused to have anything to do with him. We may picture the scene in which after telling the story Jesus paused so the people could imagine the two

men praying in the temple. Everyone was quiet. Some were probably thinking what a good man the Pharisee was. Others might have been wondering why the tax collector was even in the temple. The irony of this text, and the point Jesus is making, is that judgment is God’s realm, and we – no matter

our status – are called to humility and repentance. The Pharisee has much to repent of, but cannot

see it. The tax collector has much to repent of, and does. God, listening in to all the prayers, sees clearly where forgiveness and compassion belong. We are called to learn as we listen in with God, through the teaching of Jesus. At our time together we will learn from this story the problems of greed and pride in a few different ways.

All children and youth are welcome to join us for Bible story time and activities on the 2nd floor of the church house after the time of conversation with the pastor in worship. Childcare is available for

children 4 and under on the 2nd floor as well.
